2011 - Wasta & Jim Jeem Surveying, Sewerage and Cesspits
Project Objectives:
Removal of sewage for people living in two (2) unofficial gatherings in south Lebanon and the provision of education around health and environmental issues.
Activities:
Adequate disposal of sewage.
Purposes, Goals and Expected Results:
The Need for this Project:
Palestinian refugees residing in refugee camps throughout Lebanon and Lebanese citizens residing in rural areas have little to no removal of sewage.
Usually, it is the role of the government to provide these services in the form of sewage networks, the provision of safe drinking water and the building and maintenance of infrastructure. In the case of the Palestinians living in official camps, it is the United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) that provides these services (albeit insufficiently).
The beneficiaries of this project are Palestinian refugees living in unofficial gatherings and areas that are geographically outside the UNRWA mandate. In this case, neither the Lebanese government nor UNRWA provide sewage services.
The aim of this project is to aid the local population of the unregistered gatherings by filling the deficiencies in the health and sanitation services provided by UWRA and the Lebanese government.
Total Overseas Project Expenditures:
HSI Funds: $35,000.00

2009 Solid Waste Disposal - Southern Lebanon
All pictures below were taken on the most recent HSI field visit in December 2010:
Project Objectives:
To increase access to safe water for 34,204 people living in ten (10) unofficial gatherings in south Lebanon and Beirut and to reduce rodent and insect infestations benefiting 33,000 people living in eight (8) unofficial gatherings in south Lebanon and Beirut.
Activities:
Adequate disposal of solid waste
Purposes, Goals and Expected Results:
The Need for this Project:
Palestinian refugees residing in refugee camps throughout Lebanon and Lebanese citizens residing in rural areas - especially those devastated by the 2006 war - have had the removal of solid waste severely curtailed.
Usually, it is the role of the government to provide these services in the form of solid waste collection and disposal, provision of safe drinking water and the building and maintenance of infrastructure. In the case of the Palestinians living in official camps, it is the United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) that provides these services (albeit insufficiently).
