On
Sunday October 15th, 2000, HUMANSERVE
hosted it's annual Fundraiser in the theatre at the Stanley A. Milner Library (formerly
Centennial Library) in downtown Edmonton. The event was
attended by approximately 200 people.
Due to the on-going clashes in
Palestine which began on September 29, 2000, our guest speaker, Mr. Rashid Masharawi, a
Palestinian film maker and his wife Areen, a Palestinian actor, were
unable to obtain travel permits to leave the West Bank and were
therefore unable to reach the airport in Tel Aviv for their scheduled
flight to Canada. As a result, we were also unable to screen
Mr. Masharawi's latest film, "Behind
the Walls", a documentary about the struggle for
Jerusalem. Instead, Mashrawi's 1996 film "Tension"
was viewed and through it the audience was able to get a glimpse of the
frustrations and humiliations suffered daily by Palestinian's in the
West Bank and Gaza. Also at the reception was the Sabeel
Photo Exhibit - a haunting visual narrative of the Palestinian
experience under occupation and exile with additional pictures that
predate the 1948 war and consequent expulsion from Palestine.
After the film, guests participated in the Silent
Auction where original art and
handicrafts by Palestinian artists were up for bid.

We are pleased to announce that HUMANSERVE
was able to raise $11, 706 in
donations and pledges. HUMANSERVE
transferred $4,500 to the Palestine Red
Crescent Society (PRCS) in response to their Emergency Medical
Service's Emergency
Appeal for Funds which was issued because of the
current clashes in Palestine. The remainder of funds raised will
support on-going HUMANSERVE relief
and development projects in Lebanon and Palestine. Special thanks
to everyone who generously donated. Your dollars will make a
difference.
We would also like to give a
special thank-you to the following individuals and businesses who
